Over the river and to the train…

Thursday’s walk along the LA River, across the 5 freeway and through Griffith Park was a lovely reminder of the waterway that cuts across the megalopolis that is southern California.   It was also a reminder of the problems we face.  The riverbank was lined with neatly set up tents occupied by a community of homeless citizens.   In the middle of the river,  a cheerfully painted rock dubbed an encampment under the trees, “Thug’s Island.”   We saw people sharing a tub of ice cream, cleaning up trash around their tents and briskly walking the pathways between.
